Sugar!

It was all over the news yesterday that weird sounding drinks from leading coffee shop chains contain staggering amounts of sugar. This is a completely closed world to me, and I understand that the portions containing up to 99 grammes of sugar (that's as much as a whole victoria sandwich cake!) are more akin to buckets than cups... But all the same. Ninety nine grammes is apparently the equivalent of 25 teaspoons. When I make my bedtime cocoa, it contains one teaspoon of sugar. Even if the notorious 'Starbucks’s Hot Mulled Fruit - grape with chai, orange and cinnamon venti' is three times the size, what poisonously bitter substances must it contain to offset that much sweetness?

  1. Ah but check the label as to how much sugar is already hiding in your bedtime cocoa. I suspect it will be a lot more then you think.

  2. Just done a quick Google for the nutritional values of Cadbury's hot chocolate, one of the leading brands. And one portion made with semi skimmed milk contained 23g of sugar. So 6 teaspoons of sugar. Plus of course whatever you add yourself!

  3. Not hot chocolate; cocoa. Which (I've just googled) has 0-2% sugar in the dry powder. So one heaped teaspoon of cocoa powder = between none and about 3/100 of a teaspoon of sugar.

  4. As always the old fashioned variety is the best health wise. Any modern manufactured food seems to be full of stuff non of us should eat or drink.
